Play Centre
Play what, how, with who?
Our society, schools, and mainstream education often ignores the importance of playing and games. “Going to school” and “classes” have supplanted the primary mode of childhood learning – play. The Play Centre at Drama Rainbow Education puts play, especially social play, at the heart of our work. To this date, PlayLab has designed over 50 activities, including: patching, handcrafting, designing, weaving, and building. Mums and dads work together with their children to use their hands. As hands are the tools of the mind, understanding hands, seeing your own and the hands of others at play, is the core purpose of PlayLab. In addition, we also invite many artists from the fields of art, design and crafts including embroidery, traditional arts, traditional crafts, and other art forms, to show our member families how to use these different forms to have fun and to play with significance.
We want to see these changes, in no particular order, through our Play Centre:
- Improved learning capacities
- Improved mental health and community cooperation
- More interaction among family members; increased play between generations
- Serious play for children and adults
PlayLab
PlayLab was created for happy, purposeful inter-generational and playful learning, as well as for improving children’s physical and mental wellbeing. Drama Rainbow Education has developed and extended this concept to playing through arts and crafts, enabling children and adults to take play seriously and conduct activities together that connects hands and brain, through engineering, digital media, crafts, and art.
Don’t Ignore the Power of Play
Children who can Play are more able!
Through imaginative, ‘hands-on’ creative, and social participation, PlayLab develops important skills for the 21st century, including motor skills, problem solving, collaboration, innovation, and empathy. Our goal is to make children feel “I can” master these skills, and to apply the “I can” attitude to both body and mind through simple activities.
Playing is Serious
The Family that can Play is more Harmonious!
PlayLab also hopes to provide time and space for creating content that parents can play with their children, and provides parents with a space that can support imagination and creativity.
Through inter-generational play, we have cultivated a space with a sense of shared ownership between child and adult, which will have an important role in building a sense of harmony and wellbeing within the family. Meanwhile, this inter-generational play also develops a community spirit of learning together.
