Want to be a Drama in Education Facilitator?
Teaching & Learning Centre
Any teacher also must be a learner, or even a learner first, and these two cannot be separated. As we struggled to establish Drama Rainbow Education, we paid great attention to rigorous and continuous internal training. We also conducted many observations, evaluations, and analyses of teaching practices. These valuable experiences enabled our Teaching & Learning Centre to create a large number of training products. Whether it is teacher training for kindergarten, early years development, or primary and secondary schools, Drama Rainbow Education’s Creative Curriculum, or the Summer School, co-organized with Jianxue International Education and Culture institute, the training we provide for teachers, academics, managers of kindergartens and primary schools, and individual artists and educators of all backgrounds, has become important to the development of DiE in mainland China.
Drama Rainbow Education boasts 30 years of international DiE teaching and research experience and ten years of local Chinese teaching experience, and has been actively developing its teacher development plan since 2012. This aims to establish a newer generation of Chinese educators and drama practitioners equipped with the theoretical understanding to bridge the gap between policy makers and practitioners. Learning to learn, independent thinking, creativity, identifying problems, critical thinking, personal expression, social development, and drama skills are the goals of our teacher development. The plan creates opportunities for drama teachers to explore teaching methods and encourages them to engage in imaginative and creative teaching.
DRE Creative Curriculum
The creative curriculum, developed by the Teaching & Learning Centre since 2013, is an integrated curriculum for DiE in kindergartens and primary schools. The Centre provided teacher training based on both our KLCC and the PLCC courses, which not only improves a teacher’s ability to construct active learning opportunities, but also provides kindergarten and primary school teachers with high-quality picture books, stories, and teaching plans, as well as detailed DiE theory which integrates these teaching materials into a cross-curriculum drama course. Teacher training and practices for the creative curriculum have been implemented by many kindergartens, primary schools and educational institutions in Beijing, Shanghai, Dalian, Zhengzhou, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, and Nanjing. Kindergartens and preschools affiliated to the China National Children’s Center (CNCC), which has been working with Drama Rainbow Education using our Creative Curriculum materials for seven years. CNCC has been awarded the title of the Beijing Beacon of Excellence in Kindergarten’s, in recognition of good practice in early years education.

The aim was to achieve the teaching goals of different disciplines and fields planned in the government’s strategy, Learning and Development Guide for Children 3-6 Years, through the teaching method of DiE. This course, designed and written by Professor Carmel O’Sullivan, the Director of the School of Education,Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. Carmel is also our consultant at Drama Rainbow Education. Jianxue International Summer School
Quality Teaching
In 2015 in Qingdao, Li Yingning opened the first summer school in mainland China for the purpose of training drama teachers. The course, extending across three levels over three years, sees each year having a ten-day course. The syllabus, at that time, was based on the original UCE/Birmingham City University course, hosted by David Davis, which was a master’s programme, and students who passed after three years of learning were recognized as highly qualified DiE practitioners. Using the UCE MA as a model, since 2015, Drama Rainbow Education has taken on and structured a systematic teacher training programme for the summer school. The experience of the past five years has allowed us to gradually change the syllabus into a process that is more appropriate for Chinese teachers; more in line with the Chinese context and theoretical materials available in Mandarin.
Practical knowledge
Becoming elite practitioners in the field
The purpose of the summer school is to provide a comprehensive study of: the development of DiE in practice; a critical appraisal of current developments in DiE; a high standard of rigorous thinking applied in practice, and the professional support of imaginative and critical teaching practice. The full course is three years, and each summer or winter vacation students participate on one of the three levels of study organized throughout the year, and complete assignments (including independent reading; teaching at least one drama workshop or course, and submitting a record of the course or lesson to the Center, dated before April 30th each year). They will be awarded a certificate of completion after each level.
